Hiring and Selection Committee Training:

These trainings focus on diversifying the applicant pools, eliminating biases and missteps in the selection process. Attend a session to gain practical learning tools around diversity, equity and inclusion related to the hiring selection process.

Mitigating Unconscious Bias:

What is unconscious bias? How does it impact the ways in which we interact with one another, make decisions or engage in our work? In this session, participants will learn about unconscious bias, both implicit and explicit as well as the ways it may influence your communication and decision-making. A variety of interactive activities, including the Implicit Association Test, will give participants multiple opportunities to explore the concepts presented. Participants will also learn a variety of ways in which we can mitigate the impact of unconscious bias in our professional and personal lives.

Interrupting Microaggressions:

This session will focus on the concept of microaggressions. Specifically, the concept will be defined and explained utilizing relevant research and findings. The different microaggression subtypes will be identified and delineated in order to help participants identify when a microaggression is being communicated. Participants will also content related to the psychological, behavioral and cognitive impact of microaggressions on an individual. Finally, explicit instruction on how to interrupt microaggressions will be provided using a variety of strategies and interactive opportunities.

The Fault Lines framework considers how personal bias along the “Fault Lines” of race, gender, sexual orientation, generation, geography and class influences relationships and how events are perceived. Originally developed for newsrooms, the Fault Lines framework has been presented in corporate and academic settings. The session will cover:

o    Fault Lines framework: understanding your Fault Lines blind spots across race, class, gender, generation, geography, sexual orientation and how they create perception bias.

o    Unconscious Bias: how biases are formed, how to be conscious of your own.

o    Microaggressions: what are they and who commits them?

Jean Marie Brown is the senior Fault Lines trainer for the Maynard Institute. The Oakland, California-based organization has addressed issues around diversity and the media for 40+ years.

Pronoun Fluency Training:

This workshop is designed to give faculty and staff an opportunity to develop familiarity with pronoun usage and strategies of address. Do you have questions about non-binary pronouns? Do you keep calling someone in your life by the wrong pronouns? Are you unsure how to talk to new people without gendering them? This workshop includes practical, hands-on opportunities to improve your knowledge or usage of pronouns, especially if you struggle to get other people’s pronouns right. We will also share best practices for inclusion of this information into syllabi and classroom settings. All genders and identities are welcome.
